What is the journey of a family day care (FDC) educator?
- To be a FDC educator, no prior early childhood education and care experience or have educated/worked with children required.
- You will need to meet certain minimum requirements. Please refer to the Educator Requirements section for more information on minimum requirements to be a FDC Educator.
- If you are working towards a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, we will work with you to assist you on your journey to becoming a family day care educator.
- Many long day care educators transition to family day care to enjoy the freedoms of working from home, the small group setting and the ability to tailor programs for individual children.
To operate a family day care business, do you need to own your own property?
- Family day care educators can run a business from their own property or one that they are renting (with permission from their landlord). Many family day care educators run successful businesses from rental properties.
Do educators need to have their own children to operate a family day care business?
- While many family day care educators begin their business for the chance to earn an income and spend time with their own children, there is no requirement for an educator to have their own children.

- You can run your own family day care business from anywhere within New South Wales and there are many successful family day care businesses located in a range of different geographic settings across the state.
Do you need to be registered with an approved family day care service or scheme to run your own family day care business?
- Yes! As a family day care educator, you will need to be registered with an approved family day care service.
